Space

Installation Art - Experiments with space

newspaper clipping

"This is about being aware of the space around you. Experiments with space show how you can change and exploit the norm." A car park ticket was purchased, and the space utilised to its full by laying grass into all four corners - it shows an alternative use of the space, and the event was photographed and filmed for people's reaction. "Other people's interaction with the altered space was interesting - stepping on it, not stepping on it, seeing it, not seeing it, amazement, confusion, parking on it, even a little boy peeing on it".

In the second adaptation of this installation, Scott was booked to exhibit work in a coffee shop - but instead of hanging paintings he brought the outdoors in and laid the floor and tables with turf.

"I want to push boundaries to make people aware of the space around them. There were no terms to say that I had to park a car in the space or that I had to put art on the walls". By using space in an alternative way, Scott Clark alters the appearance of the 'space' in question and by altering the appearance, people become more aware of the space itself, and so he achieves his aim.
