Installation Art I - Change

This particular installation explores the connection between sculpture and surroundings, a somehow quiet connection that exists in the privacy of such an installation. The chrysalis was once a caterpillar and will become a butterfly, but for a while endures a state in which it is neither. A state of limbo or suspended animation is present, and it is this state that interests me and fuels the concept of this work.

The chosen building is a listed one - once a factory, busy and powerful, but now empty before it's destroyed to make way for shopping centres or houses. At the point of this 'installation' the building also endures a state of limbo. It is this 'in-between' state that connects the pupae to the building and together they symbolise the very concept of change.

The five foot chrysalis sculpture was suspended from the beautiful domed rooftops of the Dunlop Semtex building in 2001. While the installation was in progress the silently hanging sculpture was stolen. A few days later the building was demolished.

Perhaps it finally became the butterfly.
